Police registered a case under the Excise Act after recovering 77 cartons of illicit alcohol during a raid on accommodation in the village of Latala; the seven alleged smugglers, all residents of the same village, managed to escape

On Saturday evening, police recovered a cache of illicit alcohol during a raid in the village of Latala, following which they charged seven people with smuggling alcohol.

The accused, identified as Manpreet Singh, his mother Dashna Devi, Jaswinder Kaur, Gagandeep Singh, Jaspreet Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Jagdeep Singh from the village of Latala, managed to flee the scene, leaving behind their vehicles and 77 boxes of illicit alcohol. The police seized three scooters, a motorcycle and a car.

Assistant Deputy Inspector (ASI) Gursewak Singh, the investigator, said police and the Excise Department, Dehlon Circle, conducted a raid following a tip-off.

ASI added that one of the defendants is already on trial in several other liquor smuggling cases. A complaint under Sections 61, 78(2), 1 and 14 of the Excise Act was filed against the accused at Jodhan Police Station.
