Kochi: Swapna Suresh, main defendant in the Thiruvananthapuram gold smuggling case, who was released on bail earlier this month, was granted further flexibilities on Tuesday and was cleared out of Ernakulam district.
Swapna, who resides in Thiruvananthapuram district, can now travel outside of Ernakulam district, but she cannot travel outside the state, in accordance with the conditions of her bail.
She was released on bail by the Kerala High Court on November 2 after nearly 16 months in prison.
The surety intervened in the case registered against her by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). As she had also been granted bail in other cases filed against her, Swapna was able to get out of prison earlier this month.
Sarith and Ramees released on bail
Meanwhile, the other defendants in the case – Sarith PS, Ramees, Jalal Muhammed and Shafi – were released from Poojapura central prison on Tuesday while their period of one-year pre-trial detention under COFEPOSA provisions. ended and they were granted bail in other court cases. Their release came after almost a year and four months.
The smuggling case came to light on July 5, 2020, when customs arrested Sarith, a former UAE consulate employee here, for allegedly smuggling gold in diplomatic baggage destined for the consulate.
Swapna Suresh, who previously worked at the UAE consulate, her colleague Sarith PS and partner Sandeep Nair were arrested in this case by the Bengaluru NIA a few days later.
